STAYING IN DETROIT

The choice of accommodation is excellent in Detroit, despite the fact that it is scattered across a sprawling area. Many resort to staying near the airport, or at Dearborn for convenience. In the last two decades, the business conferences and conventions have been less frequent and because of this reason, many hotel chains concentrated in other cities in America. What happens now is that most of the many business travellers that would come to the Detroit International Auto Show in the month of January, would end up staying out in the suburbs like Windsor, Dearborn and Romulus.
The city is usually referred to as Motor City, because from your hotel room, you will either take the cab or your car. The freeway system is excellent, and so organised compared to other cities that have so much traffic rush hour tie- ups. Even at rush hour in Detroit, the traffic moves briskly along. The worst place now for traffic headaches would be at Oakland County, where the traffic system is totally inadequate.

Downtown Detroit has suffered many decades of decline and the choice of accommodation remains slightly limited. The tallest building in Detroit, the Marriott Renaissance centre has some great views of the city. There are also some great hotels located around the Cobo Convention Centre, as well as near to the entertainment scene. Near the East End of Downtown, one can find some great choices of hotels, due to the fact that there is a large casino complex being built at the Omni Detroit River Place.

Not far from Downtown is the New Cultural Centre, which is near the Medical Centre and the Wayne State University. Dearborn is only 15 minutes away from here. There are some great family run hotels in the area, but accommodation is also slightly limited.
