Detroit is renowned across America as one of the best cites for eating out. The city has welcomed immigrants from across the globe down through the decades, and each immigrant group that settled in Detroit brought their own cuisine to share with the locals. The older settlers like the Germans, Italians, the Irish, the Polish and the Greeks were a long time settled into the Detroit community before the recent wave of immigration from South American, India and the far East began to arrive. Now Detroit has restaurants that offer an astounding range of cuisine and with all the competition, the prices are just fantastic. These great restaurants can be found throughout the urban sprawl of Detroit. Making that extra effort to seek out these great restaurants is really worth the extra effort. Downtown Detroit went through some lean years in the 70s and 80s, and the place would not have survived if it wasn't for the Greektown's Athenian restaurants, that kept the small area ticking over, with its customers coming back for more helpings of saganki, or flaming cheese, and now the Greektown has grown and prospered. Such places like the Pegasus Taverna, the Laikon cafe and the New Hellas Cafe are all still popular hangouts. Not too far from here is the Fishbones Rhythm Kitchen Cafe, the Ja Da restaurant offering some great soul food, and the Italian Intermezzo Restaurant. On top of the Renaissance Centre is the Summit Restaurant that offers some great views of the city. On the East Side of Downtown is the American eatery, the Opus One Restaurant that is forever popular. Further East side is the warehouse district that is known as Rivertown. The Rattlesnake Club and the Dunlevys River Place offer up some fine American fare. The Northern end of Downtown can boast about the New Century Club that is full of old worlde decor and is a great place to relax in. Also here is the Hockytown Cafe. |
