About a mile west of Downtown, one can find the Mexicantown, where the Hispanic people of the city reside in the southwest side of Downtown. The Mexican Village restaurant is an old favourite here, and also the Xochimilco Restaurant is becoming extremely popular in the area. The further west you go, the cheaper and more authentic the food becomes. Try a South American dish at El Comal. There are some great Irish bars near the Tiger Stadium. Places like Nemos, or the Old Shillelagh downtown. Another great bar downtown is the Lindell A.C., where you can admire all the sporting memorabilia on its walls. The New Cultural centre, where the Wayne State University is located, has some fine restaurants like Whitney, which is housed in an elegant old mansion. Also around here is the Traffic Jam Restaurant, the Majestic Cafe that offers some great Middle Eastern cuisine. Marios Italian restaurant has being a real favourite over the years, as well as the Roma Cafe, which is down at the Eastern Market area. Near the Fisher Building, one can find the Ristorante El Centro, and offers its customers a delicious menu to choose from On the Eastern end of Dearborn, Detroit has the largest Arabic population of any American city. On Warren Avenue and Michigan Avenue, one can sample some Middle Eastern cuisine. La Shish restaurant is really popular with the locals, and the quality of the food is incredible, along with the remarkable prices. Oakland County has transformed its sleepy aging downtown suburb into one of the trendiest places outside San Francisco. The Downtown Royal Oak now has some great punk and resale clothing stores, along with fantastic restaurants and bars that are permanently busy throughout the week. |
