One can take the Detroit Trolley, which runs from Mariners Church and along the Jefferson Avenue and up towards Washington Boulevard. This route will give you an instant glimpse of Detroit's main buildings. Also one can take a trip on the elevated Detroit People Mover, which loops around the main city core. This is a 15-minute ride that will show up the good, the bad and the ugly of Detroit. From Downtown skyscrapers, the Detroit River, Comerica Park, Greektown, the ruined shop front facades, and the abandoned movie theatres. Make sure you take a stroll around Greektown to admire the Second Baptist Church, as well as the buzzing atmosphere of the area. Take a riverside walk via the Hart Plaza. This area is nice and it was a pity that the city planners blocked so much of the riverfront with large buildings. One can watch the pleasure boats as well as the ore freighter making their way along the Detroit River. One can also book a dinner cruise that is a great way to see the city and enjoy the fresh water breeze. Around the Cultural Centre/New Centre one can visit the Detroit Institute of Arts, which houses the famed Diego Rivera murals, as well as the Auguste Rodins sculpture, the Thinker. Also around here is the grand public library, the Science Centre, the Historical Museum, and the Charles Wright Museum of African American History. These places are all well worth a few hours and are within walking distance of each other. |
